MAUI HALF MARATHON AND THEN SOME...

it seems like ages since i've blogged on xanga . i just couldn't keep up with all the posts...although i have been enjoying reading all your cool posts out there in xangaland

well, many of you know me and some friends had been training for the Maui Half Marathon. i wanted to run a martahon before i turned 30, but since that didn't happen, i figured i could run 2 half marathons while  i'm 30. you think that will equal the full marathon ? haha.

well we just got back from our trip and we ACTUALLY DID IT! woo hoo  ! it was my first half marathon and the longest i've ever run. that's 13.1 miles . pretty good considering i could barely run 2 miles when we first started training. so, we went. we finished. we had such a good time hanging out...especially after the marathon . seriously, we were all a little stressed out about the marathon the night before...saying how we'd enjoy maui so much more after we finished. we were pretty good about training up until 2 weeks before the trip. most of us didn't run at all the last 2 weeks and i think it took it's toll. but we all finished.. i think it was all the 60+ year old runners passing us up that motivated us to cross that finish line .

so let me introduce you to my running crew:

Maui9

ann "i got things to do" kim, jen "i'm gonna walk this marathon, but really run it" kim, connie "slow but steady" chae, and me, sheila "i lost a toenail from running" lachica.

this marathon and trip was very meaningful for me. not only because it was the longest run i've done and that i actually finished....but because of these girls that i ran and trained with. i am so thankful for these girls...although we've known each other for years, i think we have spent this last year growing even more in fellowship and accountability. they have all been an encouragement to me...so i find it fitting that we ran this marathon together because they have all encouraged me in many ways to "run the race" and to "press on for the prize".

speaking of prize, aren't our medals cool ? the marathon was actually not too bad in the beginning. we started at 5:30am so it was dark and cool. and those first 6 miles were pretty easy since everyone is trotting along. it was the halfway point when the sun and humidity kicked in, that i started to feel the struggle. after 10 miles, i was having a hard time. but i tell ya, seeing some older people pass you by will make you want to finish. so i had to turn up the music on the ipod and bring it home. it was a great feeling passing that finish line and hearing them announce your name!

apart from the marathon, maui was very realxing . we arrived to a beautiful view at our villa. how surprised were we that our backyard was the beach! our view from the lobby...

we spent the first evening watching the sunset outside. absolutely beautiful...

we loved the sunsets so much we made it a point to get home in time everyday to catch it. we registered for our run on saturday, tried to catch some sun, and hit bed early to rest. the marathon sponsored a "carbo-load" dinner the night before that sold out. we didn't need it because we had jen with us . she cooked us up a yummy pasta dinner and salad.

i have these pair of Locals slippers that i bought on my first trip to hawaii which i love to wear. i always talk about them. so i told the girls they all had to get a pair (or two).  they sell them at Long's Drugs for less than $4 and are so comfy! needless to say we all came home with more than a few pairs  actaully i think we cleared out the local Long's stock of slippers

so while we were running the marathon, we all saw a calvary chapel service beachside and decided to catch their 2nd service. so after taking turns in our bathtub ice bath and some ice packs (we were all pretty sore) we put on our flip flops and attended sunday service along the ka'anapali shores. i think this church always meets here in the park along the beach. it was a gorgeous view

anyways, that's all i'm up for tonight. i will post part 2 later...stuff we did after the marathon

Professional Bridesmaid

i was a bridesmaid again this past weekend. i really think i could be a professional bridesmaid for a living. honestly, i stopped counting how many times i've been a bridesmaid, but i think i've hit the double digit mark . i'm not complaining...i'm just saying. and this last wedding was for my cousin, who is practically like my little sister...so that made it even more meaningful to be a part of the wedding party. my recent wedding cameos has had  me in the role of maid of honor. this recent wedding was very emotional for me...maybe because i saw my little cousin all grown up. maybe because all the relatives thought they were the only ones asking me "so,  are you next?" .  it's all good, i was mentally prepared .

so, with all my bridesmaid experience, i realized there are some major perks, besides the obvious, to being in the wedding party.

10.  You get to sit at the head table
9.  You get a good view of the bride & groom for pictures
8.  You get to take home a pretty bouqet of flowers
7.  As a bridesmaid, you get to change out of shoes and into slippers without anyone seeing them under your gown...which makes for much comfier dancing
6.    Most bridesmaid dresses come with some sort of shawl, which makes for fun dancing accessories on the dance floor
5.  You get a good reason to get your hair and makeup done all fancy
4.  You don't have to worry about taking a date since you'll be sitting with the wedding party
3.  It's almost impossible to be late to the wedding/reception
2.  You're one of the first people to get served your meal
1.  You don't have to worry about what to wear!

the wedding was good times with la familia. pictures coming soon...

A Berkeley Weekend

i flew up north this past weekend with my family to watch our little bro Bud perform in his first PCN (Pilipino Cultural Night). it brought back memories of when i did PCN my freshman year at UCLA. i remember crazy hours of practices and stuff for the show...which is why i never did PCN after that.  i had forgotten what a big production it was!

we were lucky to get some great weather while up there...and we even got some pretty cherry blossoms to see. i think that's what they were. how embarassing to post pictures of them if they aren't...

here's lem & cyn (and baby -uel)

and me & pops...my dad got that hat on his recent trip to italy. he's convinced he looks really cool in it

i know bud put a lot of time and effort into this show. and what a cool show it was! unlike traditional PCN shows with long-winded stories, their PCN was broken down into mini-skits that touched on different issues of Filipino-Americans. it was both funny and entertaining as well as touching and thought provoking. props to CAL's PCN crew...even though they aint got no love for UCLA up there . i was a little sad to hear a bunch of boos whenever UCLA was mentioned . bunch of haters  not that i'm bitter or anything...i'm just saying.

so, bud did this traditional dance on some benches (Sayaw sa Bangko) that's him in the middle with the faux-hawk comb-over.

the benches kept getting higher! i had never seen this dance before...pretty cool

so...i knew my brotha was a pretty good dancer...after all, he's our brother right ?...but when we were watching him do the modern dance(hip-hop...or in my dad's words "heeep hope"), i was pretty impressed! i kept turning to lem saying "hey, bud's pretty good!" maybe it was his mohawk that made his movements look so sharp  i'd post video clips if i knew how. great job, bud! we're so proud of you!!

here's a shot of a bamboo pole dance (Panalagay ha Pattong). the guy balancing on the poles on the right is Ben Lachica...my brother and cousins met him up at Berkeley and although we didn't know him or his family, we're convinced he's our cousin

probably one of the funniest parts of the show was this character named "Fo-Shiz"...he's based on the character "Sho-Nuff" from the movie "The Last Dragon". if you've ever seen that movie, you would've thought Fo-shiz was hillarious. i was crackin up!!  too funny  that's him in the middle with the big fro and the guys behind him were his goons who followed him saying "Fo-shiz! Fo-shiz!"

post-show, we got to see the star dancer up close and personal. what could be worse for moms & pops to see their son in a mohawk?....seeing their son in a mohawk WITH make-up  we had to clue them in that make-up is needed for being on stage

i thought he looked good in eyeshadow. i always said bud would be a pretty girl

a family picture...

the Berkeley kids...Bud, newfound cousin Ben, Lex & Lauren

we visited bud's dorm room...wasn't nearly as clean as the way we left it when he first moved in when mom had scrubbed down everything she could with lysol wipes. in fact she would have died to see it that day...good thing she didn't come with us . hey bud, you guys gotta throw out all that trash!! here we are hanging out in there.

we spent the rest of the weekend hanging out near campus. i finally got to visit what they call "asian ghetto". bud always talks about it and says "it's not much"....uh, he was right . just good cheap asian food for starving college students. we ate at Thai Basil...pretty good.

i was in shock at how cheap boba drinks were there! only 99 cents ! that's $1.29 with boba. that's some low-down ghetto prices, man.

tiring but very fun weekend! i thought it was interesting that the one guy who didn't dance in PCN, didn't drive all weekend, and didn't have trouble sleeping because their siblings snore too loud...was the one who was most tired  again, not that i'm bitter or anything...but i'm just saying

good times

Too Close for Comfort

oh my...the ending to texas v. WV was crazy BUT what a thriller UCLA's game was tonight against Gonzaga. i really thought we were gonna lose. i would have to admit Gonzaga played the better game, but props to our beloved bruins who showed a lot of heart keeping in the game and pulling it together in the end. and what an exciting end it was

and big props to adam morrison, who played a great game i think. i felt bad for the guy when he lay on the floor crying. gotta give it up to a guy who plays that well and looks like he should be on That 70's Show
